Product Description This seventeen song CD by Professor Louie & THE CROWMATIX, a five piece rock ensemble and a mainstay from Woodstock, NY, is creating a national buzz. A wealth of musical, lyrical and thematic influences range from the funky to the ethereal. Review The first time I saw Professor Louie & the Crowmatix playing live was in 2000. Timeless and true, the musicianship was understated but powerful, the music full of great depth they played as an ensemble, as if with one giant hand. They have continued to this day playing hundreds of shows and recording 7 CD s. The Crowmatix roots are intrinsically and intimately intertwined with The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame group The Band. Most of the so-called No Depression (the monthly bible for roots music) artists place The Band at the top of their list of influences. But instead of merely being heavily influenced by The Band like most Americana groups, the Crowmatix played, recorded & worked for them. The Crowmatix find themselves carrying on under the Americana music banner. Crowmatix founder Aaron Professor Louie Hurwitz, engineered, co-produced and played on the last three Band albums and was the main instigator here. Louie performed for years with the well-loved Band bassist and singer Rick Danko and it was Danko who came up with the nickname Professor Louie. Early on, the Crowmatix backed Levon Helm, recorded as Rick Danko s backing band on his posthumous Times Like These, and with Garth Hudson on his solo CD The Sea to the North. The first time I jammed with the Crowmatix was in a basement club. For me, it was a thrill to play guitar alongside Garth on Chest Fever, but it was the Crowmatix own Over The Edge with it s relentless, deadly groove-that completely floored the crowd. Professor Louie s keyboard prowess, as well as his way with an accordion, always makes for fine entertainment. His understated voice puts the focus on the lyric, and the fine tunes they ve assembled slowly and carefully. Their good friend, Donegal songwriter Kevin Doherty is also an integral writer on all Crowmatix CD s. Miss Marie Spinosa s sweet harmonies and solo turns have always been there from day one. Always a highlight, her mere presence is a ray of light on stage. She s has co-written many Crowmtix favorites. The Crowmatix secret weapon is the brilliant Gary Burke on drums. A musician s musician, Burke s wide and varied credits include Bob Dylan, Joe Jackson, countless others. His mighty groove is found on many gold and platinum records made by Grammy winners. In 2003, venerable bass player Frank Campbell entered the fray by way of stints with Asleep at the Wheel and Steve Forbert. Campbell toured with Rick Danko and Levon Helm in the 70 s, so he was a perfect, easy fit. Fretboard fiend Josh Colow finally came into the fold in 2004, he has toured with Jesse Winchester and Livingston Taylor, and for a period of time was a pop star in Europe. His stinging yet melodic solos keep the listeners on the edge of their seat. In no time, the Crowmatix became a mainstay at the Bottom Line, as well as BB King s in NYC, playing huge festivals like the Gathering on the Mountain, London, Ontario, Thunder Bay and Toledo Bluesfests, They have been guests on the syndicated radio shows Acoustic Café and WoodSongs. They ve have built a fan base the old fashioned way, one person at a time. The Village Voice proclaimed the Crowmatix Professor Louie s upstate ensemble is an Americana template that jams out timeless rock, country, blues and New Orleans influenced originals. Record Review chimed in with "A tasty mix of rhythm & blues and rock & roll. With the Crowmatix, the road goes on. Their shows are always a celebration, but the records, stocked with Professor Louie s own fine compositions, are a real treasure. This collection is filled with favorites, plus a few new surprises.
